John Kibanya (Puree)

Serial Entreprenuer and Entertainment Consultant

The Journey of a Dreamer, Entrepreneur and Entertainment Pioneer

Every remarkable journey has a beginning, and for John Kibanya, popularly known as Puree, that beginning was far removed from the bright lights, influential entertainment spaces and international business circles that would later become part of his story. His journey started in the humble streets of Eldoret, where he grew up carrying a dream that was much bigger than his circumstances. From a tender age, John was naturally drawn to music, dance and entertainment. Even when the future was uncertain, he had an unmistakable passion for entertaining people and connecting with those around him. Music and dance became more than activities; they became a form of expression, a source of confidence and a glimpse into a future that he could not yet clearly see.

John’s early life was not defined by privilege or a guaranteed path to success. Like many young people with big dreams, he had to navigate uncertainty and limitations while trying to understand where his passion could take him. What separated him, however, was his willingness to pursue opportunities and his belief that there had to be more beyond the circumstances around him. That belief would eventually take him far beyond Eldoret and into an experience that would completely transform his perspective on life, business and entertainment.

After high school, John received a scholarship opportunity to travel to China, where he pursued Business Management. Leaving Kenya for a completely different country and culture was a major step, but China would become one of the most defining chapters of his life. It was there that John began to discover abilities that he had not fully realised he possessed. He immersed himself in Mandarin and developed an impressive command of the language as a second language. His ability to communicate fluently in both English and Mandarin soon became a valuable skill, opening doors beyond his academic pursuits.

John became a sought-after translator, helping bridge communication between English-speaking and Mandarin-speaking individuals and businesses. His reputation grew within corporate circles in Guangzhou, where he developed strong relationships and built a network that would later prove invaluable. Through his work, he interacted with business leaders and investors who were increasingly interested in Africa and exploring opportunities on the continent. John found himself in a unique position, connecting people, cultures and ideas between China and Africa. What began as a language skill gradually became a powerful business and networking opportunity, exposing him to a world of international investment, entrepreneurship and corporate relationships.

China did more than expand John’s professional network. It changed the way he saw possibility. He began to understand that success was not confined to one industry or one country and that the ability to connect with people could be just as valuable as technical knowledge. His growing network introduced him to different perspectives on business, leadership and opportunity, while his natural personality made it easy for him to build relationships wherever he went. In 2012, his contribution and ability to mobilise young people were recognised when he received an award for Upcoming Youth Mobiliser in China. For a young man who had started his journey in Eldoret with little more than passion and determination, the recognition was a significant milestone.

Yet, even as his professional life in China continued to grow, John’s childhood passion for entertainment remained alive. Music, dance and the energy of entertainment had never really left him. Instead, his experiences in China gave him a new understanding of how entertainment could be transformed into a serious business. He began combining his business education, international exposure, language skills and natural ability to connect with people, gradually establishing himself as an entertainment consultant, influencer, host and serial entrepreneur.

John played a leading role in the opening of major entertainment destinations in Guangzhou, including Richie’s and Wave Bar, where he was also involved as an influencer and host. These experiences gave him a deeper understanding of the entertainment industry and the business behind it. He learned that a successful entertainment destination is not simply a physical space where people gather. It is a carefully created experience built around branding, hospitality, entertainment, customer relationships, marketing and community. He began to understand what attracts audiences, what keeps people coming back and how memorable experiences can transform an ordinary night into something people continue talking about long after they leave.

This period became an important foundation for the professional he would eventually become. John was no longer simply a young man passionate about entertainment. He was developing the knowledge, confidence and experience required to operate within the industry at a much higher level. His exposure to international business also gave him a broader perspective, allowing him to see the connection between entertainment, entrepreneurship and economic opportunity. He was learning how relationships could create businesses, how ideas could become experiences and how people with different backgrounds could come together around a shared vision.

In 2014, John returned to Kenya with a completely different level of experience. He had left the country as a young man pursuing his education and returned with international exposure, business knowledge, cultural understanding, a strong network and years of practical experience in the entertainment industry. His return brought him to Nairobi, one of Africa’s most vibrant entertainment capitals, where he was ready to put everything he had learned into practice.

John became involved with a number of entertainment destinations, including Golden Ice Bistro, Blackstars, Gemini, Ony Lounge, Milan, Black Samurai, Kiza Lounge, Euphoria, Blend and Iris. Each experience gave him a deeper understanding of Kenya’s rapidly evolving entertainment industry and allowed him to work with different audiences, teams, brands and business models. He saw the opportunities that existed within the industry, but he also experienced the challenges that entrepreneurs and entertainment professionals face when trying to build sustainable businesses in a competitive environment.

His international experience gave him a unique perspective. John understood that entertainment was much bigger than the people audiences saw on stage or on the dance floor. Behind every successful event and entertainment destination was an entire ecosystem of people working together. There were venue owners, promoters, entertainers, DJs, hosts, photographers, videographers, decorators, caterers, designers, production teams and countless other professionals whose work determined whether an experience would be remembered or forgotten. His experience allowed him to appreciate the value of every person contributing to that ecosystem.

As his reputation grew, John began developing his own identity within the entertainment industry through the name Puree. His entrepreneurial spirit pushed him beyond working within established entertainment spaces and into creating experiences of his own. One of the concepts associated with his brand was the Dons $ Bottles, Whiskies & Cigars Party, which featured a distinctive all-black dress code and became part of the identity he built around Puree. His ability to create a recognisable experience demonstrated his understanding of branding, audience engagement and the emotional side of events.

The identity of Puree became closely associated with confidence, personality and an unmistakable sense of style, eventually giving rise to his famous declaration, โ€œ The King of All Black in Kenya.โ€ While the statement carries the confidence expected of someone operating in entertainment, it also reflects something deeper about John’s entrepreneurial approach. He understands the importance of identity and the value of creating experiences that people can associate with a particular person, feeling or brand. In an industry where audiences are constantly exposed to new experiences, John understands that being memorable is part of building a lasting brand.

Today, John Kibanya is a serial entrepreneur, entertainment consultant, influencer, host and experience creator whose journey has taken him across different industries, cultures and business environments. His experience in Kenya and China has given him a perspective that is both local and international. He understands entertainment from the perspective of the audience, the host, the business owner, the promoter and the entrepreneur. More importantly, he understands the importance of relationships and the role they play in creating opportunities.

Despite the places he has been and the people he has encountered, John remains grounded and approachable. His journey has not removed him from his roots. If anything, it has strengthened his appreciation for the people and experiences that shaped him. His story is a reminder that success does not necessarily change where you come from; it can simply give you a bigger platform from which to tell your story and create opportunities for others.

It is this understanding that makes the partnership between John Kibanya and ShereheHub particularly meaningful. ShereheHub is built around the belief that events are more than individual services. Every celebration, wedding, corporate function, concert, birthday or social gathering brings together an ecosystem of talented people and businesses whose combined efforts create memorable experiences. From entertainment and catering to dรฉcor, photography, fashion, beauty, venues, logistics, production and countless other services, the events industry is powered by entrepreneurs whose stories deserve to be seen.

John understands that ecosystem because he has lived it. He has been involved in entertainment spaces, hosted audiences, created events, built networks, worked across cultures and helped develop entertainment destinations. He understands the pressure behind creating successful experiences and the importance of connecting the right people to the right opportunities. His journey reflects exactly the kind of entrepreneurial spirit that ShereheHub seeks to celebrate and support.

For ShereheHub, John is therefore more than an ambassador. He represents the people behind the events industry and the thousands of entrepreneurs who have chosen to turn their passions into businesses. He represents the creative who started with an idea, the event professional who built a career from experience, the entrepreneur who continues to take risks and the young person who believes that their current circumstances do not have to define their future.

Perhaps the most powerful part of John’s story is where it began. There was a time when he was simply a young man growing up in Eldoret and dreaming through music and dance. There was a time when China was an unfamiliar country and Mandarin was a language he was still learning. There was a time when he had not yet built relationships with international business leaders, worked within major entertainment spaces or created his own events. There was a time when the name Puree had not yet become part of Kenya’s entertainment conversation.

Every chapter began with a decision to take the next step.

That is what makes John’s journey bigger than entertainment. It is a story about possibility, resilience, courage and the power of believing in yourself even when the destination is not yet clear. His journey shows that a person’s beginning does not have to determine their destination. A young man from the streets of Eldoret could travel to China, learn a new language, build international relationships, enter corporate circles, contribute to major entertainment ventures, return to Kenya and establish himself as a respected entrepreneur and entertainment professional.

His story is also a reminder that dreams rarely come with a complete roadmap. Sometimes, you only see the next opportunity. Sometimes, you take a path that you never expected and discover that it was preparing you for something greater. Sometimes, the skill you learn for one purpose becomes the opportunity that opens an entirely different door.

John’s ability to speak Mandarin created opportunities in business. His business education strengthened his entrepreneurial thinking. His international network expanded his perspective. His passion for entertainment gave him purpose. His experiences in China shaped his understanding of the industry, while his return to Kenya gave him the opportunity to apply what he had learned in a market he deeply understood.

John’s journey is a powerful example of what can happen when passion meets opportunity and determination refuses to give up. It is a story that speaks not only to entertainment professionals but to every young entrepreneur, creative and dreamer who is still trying to find their place in the world.

As a ShereheHub Ambassador, John Kibanya carries this story into a new chapter. His role represents a shared belief that talent deserves to be discovered, entrepreneurs deserve opportunities, creativity deserves a platform and experiences have the power to bring people together. ShereheHub is building a marketplace where the people and businesses behind memorable events can be discovered, connected and given the opportunity to grow, and John’s journey reflects the very spirit behind that vision.

His story is still being written, and perhaps that is what makes it so inspiring. The young boy who once dreamed through music and dance in Eldoret could not have known where those dreams would eventually take him. He could not have predicted China, Mandarin, international business, entertainment consultancy, entrepreneurship or the Purrie brand. He simply took the opportunities that came his way, remained faithful to his passion and kept moving forward.

That is the message John carries today. You do not have to know exactly where your dream will take you. You do not have to have everything figured out before you begin. You only need the courage to believe that where you are today is not necessarily where you will end up tomorrow.

John Kibanya’s journey is proof that beginnings can be humble, paths can change and dreams can take unexpected turns. From the streets of Eldoret to the corporate circles of Guangzhou, from international business to Kenya’s entertainment industry, his story continues to remind us of one simple truth: dreams are valid, passion creates possibilities, and with determination, the journey can take you further than you ever imagined.

This is John Kibanya. This is Puree. And this is only another chapter in a journey that continues to inspire.
